NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Virginia congressman has introduced a monthly bill that would designate the Excellent Dismal Swamp a Nationwide Heritage Spot, which could deliver federal funding for historic preservation.
The Virginian-Pilot reports U.S. Rep. Donald McEachin has submitted the evaluate, which is backed by a collaborative that contains nearby Indigenous American tribes, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Company and the Affiliation for the Study of African American Everyday living & Record.
The swamp, by now recognized as a Countrywide Wildlife Refuge, served for centuries as a secure-haven for thousands of Indigenous People and Black folks escaping slavery.
“When you assume about the individuals seeking their independence, they had been created of sterner things than I am,” McEachin instructed the newspaper. “We need to make positive we maintain the swamp for long run generations … for tourism functions, for archaeological review, for the reintroduction of wildlife.”
The Fish and Wildlife Service calls the Great Dismal Swamp Countrywide Wildlife Refuge “the premier intact remnant of a vast habitat that the moment protected additional than 1 million acres of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.”
